This appears to be a study for a large and important painting from about 1915, The Old War Shield, #360. The model is a young Pueblo boy, Alberto Luhan. The painting was featured in the exhibition, Indian and Western Paintings at Gibson House galleries in Cincinnati in 1915. That show also included four paintings titled Taos Indian Boy and one called simply Alberto. This painting, Beside the Teepee's Blaze, could easily be one of those works.
