The artist; [?]; Victor Justice Evans; present owner by bequest

Sharp is known to have painted among the Sioux at Pine Ridge as early as 1900 and could have executed this portrait at that time. A portrait of this famous Oglala Lakota man was exhibited in 1900 at the Cincinnati Museum and similarly at the Pan-American Exposition and the Cosmos Club in 1901 (each time listed mistakenly as a member of the Cheyenne tribe). This may be that portrait although another version can be found at the Gilcrease Museum, # 453.

The catalogue brochures for these exhibits described him as a "Prominent Chief who has prevented many battles and uprisings by wise counsel."
