The artist; [?]; [Jane Hiatt, La Fonda Art Gallery, Taos, New Mexico]; H.J. Lutcher Stark, 1956; present owner: Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation, Orange, Texas, by bequest, 1965; accession to Stark Museum of Art, 1965

In 1923, reportedly the last year Sharp returned to Montana and the Crow Agency, he presented at least two versions of a moonlight scene along the Little Big Horn River at Traxel's Art Galleries. The Cincinnati Art Museum owns one of these scenes, #269. This watercolor must have been created at the same time.
