The artist; [?]; Dr. Philip G. Cole, Tarrytown, NY; Thomas Gilcrease, Tulsa, OK, 1947; The Thomas Gilcrease Foundation, Tulsa, OK; present owner by gift 1955
This painting has all the stylistic, compositional and technical characteristics of the 1897 painting, The Lament., #268. The Impressionist brush strokes and Post-impressionist palette suggest that this work was created in the mid-1890s. The signature type, however, is suggestive of post-1903 works.
