In November 1915, in an exhibition Indian and Western Paintings at the Gibson House galleries in Cincinnati, Sharp featured a painting the title of which almost exactly replicated his inscription on the verso of this oil. Number 3 in the exhibition was titled The Pine Forest at the Grand Canon, Arizona. This may be that work, though its small size and medium suggest that it was a study for a larger painting.

The Pine Forest is related, except for the seasonal difference, to a large painting, A Hunting Party (Coconino Forest, Arizona), #697
