Zuni Pueblo

This painting is an oil sketch of Zuni Pueblo which, according to an inscription on the verso, the artist visited in 1898. He was concentrating on Taos Pueblo and its people that summer, so Zuni, several hundred miles to the southwest, would have been quite a diversion. The sketch remained in his possession until 1946 when it was purchased by Thomas Gilcrease.

Sharp also made a second version of this view, one which he sent to Phoebe Hearst in 1904. The Hearst version is slightly more finished. The gardens look like gardens, and the river seems to run past the pueblo rather than suggest a puddle in the foreground. For the second version, the artist titled it strictly Zuni (related image 187), and it probably accompanied two other pueblo views, Pueblo of Laguna, N. M. (Record 183) and Pueblo of Taos, N. M. (Record 184).
